Still Don't Have A Name For This Decade!!!

I can't believe we are almost at the end of this decade and we still don't have a name for it, like the 80's or 90's.

People say "oh well it's the aughts or it's the 2000's." I call bullshit. We never decided on anything. Nothing ever became part of the common vernacular.

When we refer to this decade in the future we're going to have to refer to a specific year. Like, "I remember back in '06." We won't be able to do the always reliable, "thing's were so great in the 90's" for this decade.

What's even more disturbing is that next decade will have a similar problem. We could potentially call it the "teens" but we won't even be able to start doing that until 2013. So what does that make 2010 - 2012? Chopped liver?

I guess it doesn't matter anyway. The Mayans have already predicted that it will all end in 2012.

Then again I tried as hard as I could to convince my mom that the world was going to end in 1999.

She didn't buy it.

Hi,

My name is Michael, I'm 17 and I go to school and live in Hong Kong. It's nice to meet you and I think you know I've been following your posts for a few days now since you reciprocated the motion. Happy new year. :)

I followed you because you have a readable and appreciable blog. I reckon this decade will never have a name. You only need to read the other proposals here to see how baffled Man is when it comes to conjuring up a name.

We are in the eighth year, people. Someone find a name and find it now!

Michael.

How about the '0Sucks?'

2012 is when it will all end. Hmm. At least I'll have time to get my End O' the Cycle wardrobe together. I want to go out in style! Feathered headdress, anyone? Assless chaps, perhaps?

I am so jealous that the 17 year old kid uses "appreciable" in the correct context. Probably didn't even have to spell check it either. Jerk!

I vote for calling this decade "The Ends" as in "Two thous-end", "Two thous-end eight", you get my drift. That's all I got.

it may not have a name now but in a few years, they will refer to this as the Turn of the Century ...like we used to talk about 1903 and 1904...we just say the "turn of the century" - For some reason, that makes me feel ancient...to know I lived in the turn of the century.....

I've been calling this decade the "Ohs" because more often than not I have to explain what "aught" means...
Seriously.
Cheers!

Can't we just leave this job for the future historians...

I think they will probably refer to these years as "The Bush Years" here in the US...along with the adjective 'shitty'.

Its the "Aughts"! I will always refer it this decade as so. "Back in the Aughts...."

I'm thinking that this decade could be called Bushit. I would think that those who came of age in this decade would be called Bushiters.

Hmm, Its just awkward no matter which way you put it, nothing is as cheap and convenient as saying the 60s 70s 80s, etc, see how nicely that rolls off the tounge? There is no answer that is so perfectly concise. the fact that it has taken 8 years and still nothing, is proof. Its exhausting to try and think one up actually, now I have a headache, thanks a lot. ; )
